A New Era for the Tournament: Expanded to 24 Teams
Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027 is the first edition to feature 24 participating teams, enhancing competitiveness and offering fans more matches than ever before.
Teams will be divided into six pools of four, with the top two teams from each pool, plus the four best third-placed teams, progressing to the newly introduced round of 16.
This expanded format ensures more nations, more drama and more unforgettable moments across Australia 2027.
Ireland’s pool:
Ireland’s path begins in Pool D, where they will play familiar rivals Scotland, Uruguay and Portugal during the pool phase.

What is the format of RWC 2027?
- RWC 2027 will feature 24 teams, drawn into six pools (Pool A to Pool F), each consisting of four teams.
- After the pool phase, a first-ever round of 16 will be introduced. The top two teams from each pool (12 teams), plus the four best third-placed teams, will advance to the knockout phase.
- In total the tournament will have 52 matches — more than in previous editions — giving fans additional knockout rugby to enjoy.
- Importantly, despite the extra knockout round, the pool-stage schedule is slightly shorter per team (three pool matches instead of four), which helps manage player welfare.
